For us, "legography" is less about photographing Lego figures and the great stories that can be narrated with these picture sequences.
We rather build "art objects" from classic Legobricks as fully functional cameras, which - depending on model and version - in terms of image quality are in no way inferior to "conventional" studio cameras.
We only use "analog" media in a wide variety of formats. From 35mm via "medium formats" as 6x6 / 6x9 we meanwhile are able to display large formats as 5"x7" / 8 "x10" or even 12 "x15". One of our "stick horses" here is the classical direct paper exposure (optionally direct positive process or via paper negative + contact copy), with subsequent classic development in the laboratory. Instant photos from different manufacturers (e.g. Lomo, Supersenses´ One Instant, Polaroid, Fuji) and all formats (now also instant wide) are used in our cameras by means of appropriate specially adapted "backs".
As far as technically assimilable, we always try to use "as much Lego" as possible. Even our lense units (designed with one or two lenses) including aperture and "shutter" are largely made from Lego blocks - (at least up to now !) except the glas lenses themselves. In Martin Schmidgalls lab, the Lego blocks have even made it to his photo laboratory. He designed an ORWO development drum that is powered by Lego.
For our Lego cameras, we expressly prefer the use of "Lego Classic Bricks" to the use of "Lego Technics". Sometimes we also use high-quality studio lenses or so-called "old glasses" from defective folding cameras - e.g. in case if we want to shoot high quality portraits. With his little state-of-the-art "Tilt & Shift Baby" Jens currently is demonstrating what our cameras technically meanwhile are capable to do.
Each of our cameras is a very special "one-off-the-kind" here indeed ! With one of his first Lego camera projects "Lego camera pioneer" Jens Werlein even made it to the "Guggenheim Museum" in New York ! In November 2019 we (Jens Werlein, Martin Schmidgall and me) had been invited to the "Schwabenstein Lego Event 2019" at the Stuttgart trade fair. We even got our own 55 m² booth, including a tiny photo studio in a great location: Hall 1, Gallery ! A detailed report will follow up.
Manwhile a few hundred "offshoots" of Jens Werlein's original Lego camera idea can be found worlwide in a wide variety of versions. The international Lego camera community is constantly growing. This is making both of us very proud.
We ourselves are planning "something really big" for 2020. Pleaase vitist us at Stuttgart trade fair 2020: November 19th by 22nd, Hall 1, Gallery.
Imitators, new ideas and of course building materials (bricks) are always welcome to us !
Lego cameras: there are no taboos. There are no construction manuals. There are no limits.
We of course are very happy to help you with our tips. In addition, a multi-day workshop for the theme of "Lego cameras" is planned for 2020, Octoberr 23rd by 25th. For more details see "Workshops" on this website.
Have fun with our website! Best regards - Jens Werlein & Andy Wolf
